During the winter the jet stream blows from the west, scouring the snow off [V 002 / Everest's face] and creating the [P 025 / distinctive plume] from the summit. In summer, however, the wind blows more gently from the east, leaving the white mantle intact. From here you can also see Lho La, a pass between Tibet and Nepal where, in 1921, George Mallory stood and bestowed a Welsh name, the Western Cwm, on the valley he saw before him. Pressing north, beyond Kala Pattar toward Pumori, hikers get an unobstructed view all the way to the South [G 04 / Col].
